transitions

My cousin is using pinnacle (9 i think and about to move to liquid).
He made a video using version 9 and it has different wedding transitions. How do you get transitions like this into vegas. I made a simple one using a mask heart shaped and then animating a track motion parented over the video track. It worked alright except for the opaque was not perfect (you could just barely see the video via the heart).

But what if I want a boquet of flowers. Can anyone point me in a direction.

You can manually create transitions using Vegas effects but an easy way is to use the Luminance transition found here. You will need a properly designed luminance image of the shape you are wanting.

what does it mean luminence?

I done understand the term.

I'm particulalry speakin gof a jpg image. Lets say I have the boquet of flowers in my image over a blue background.
how would I use this luminance?

The choices made when editing are yours alone and shouldn't be criticized. However, the overuse of cheesy transitions gives an amateur feel to the video.

Using luminance in this context basically means using a greyscale gradient and dissolving from one video clip to another using the shape of the gradient and going from darkest to lightest, or vice versa. This means you can use a heart shape, or a bouquet of flowers, or anything else ...

Pixelan Spicemaster has a wonderful range of transitions using greyscale gradients, and you can add softness, edging, textures and make them extremely "uncheesy", but this is not that cheap.

This is, I think, one of the few omissions in Vegas - no built in Gradient transition where you can input any greyscale pic. Premiere 4 had this more than 10 years ago when I started dabbling in NLEs.

Thanks for that Peter. I didn't know that.

All I'd say about Scott's Luminance transition is that it is pure magic. It is quite film like. You set up a Vegas transition and then Scott's. Put this on a LOOP playback and do an "UNDO" and then "REDO" to see a truly exceptional real-time comparison. I feel it is like dealing with 16mm film - yes I do!

Also, if my memory ain't playing up, you can substitute an avi film as the transition pattern too.

i understand that premade transitions are cheezy

however I want to learn to make my own.

I use carrara to 3d render and animate sequences I add to my dvd menus.

I would like to find out how I can create a 3d image or a ring (im learning that) and bring it into Vegas and from vegas make transitions from there. I dont want to make the animations ALL from Carrara.

I did my sisters wed video and I scanned her invites and created the invite in 3d then I animated if falling down and spinning while opening up like a story book (its a 3 fold invite) and then when it falls on the table top its opened up then the camera zooms in (thats when the dvd menus appear).

It turned out great but I'm trying to go to the next learning step.

I just got 9 and it has some very nice snow flake transitions called Ice Crystals and I like the Electrical, Voltage and Thunderstorm effects as well. I have 1, 2 & 9. Of the three I like 1 the best. I have not seen number 7.
