I'm stumped on this one. I have split a video project into two tracks so I can adjust the brightness and colors on one set of clips while leaving the other clips as is. I want to add some dissolves between clips, but that doesn't work unless they are on the same track. Is there a workaround?
One suggestion is to render the two sets of clips separately with the brightness and color settings that you want on the final output, then put the two sets of rendered clips on the same track.
There are lots of approaches to this. I assume you're using track level effects and letting the track effect modify all the clips on the track. You could keep them all on the same track and then set keyframes to turn the effects on and off. You could also use event effects and modify each clip individually.
The other thing you can do is to make sure the clips overlap just as they would on the same track, except on separate tracks, then add fades to the heads and tails of the clips on the upper tracks that match the length of the overlap, then drop the transitions on top of the fades. Lots of transitions will work fine this way. Some will work better if you also fade the clips on the lower track and add the transition to both clip fades. A few won't work right at all, but you may like what they do anyway.
