Transitions in preview choppy

I am trying this product out and have some questions:

1) When I am previewing a clip, I like to view the transitions, however they are very choppy and don't view very well in the preview window. I have tried changing the quality to draft and all other choices but all of them produce the same effect. I have a 1GB Ram with a 2.4GHz intel processor. Why is this? When i render videos it is fine, but I only want to render when I'm done as it takes to long during editing.

2) When I change the playback speed of a cut portion of a clip I've cut, I'd expect that it drag the timeline out, however it just shows less/more of the clip beyond my original split points. I would think it would leave my split points the same and just expand the duration it takes to play the clip. Can I make movie studio behave this way?

3) Is there an auto-split feature? I have some WMV files that are 1GB in size with 60 minutes of video. I'd like to have the scene's auto trimmed as other products do.

Thanks,
Ben

1/ The usual advice is to get a program like Enditall and make sure there are no unecessary processes running on your pc.

2/ I'm not sure what the problem is here - the time line just shows what's happening at any time. If you alter the playback speed it has to change the length on the time line. When you've altered the playback speed, do you see a wavy line at the top of the clip?

3/ Again, I'm not sure what you're asking for - MS can create a number of small files during capture. I that what you want?

1) Does end it all work under windows XP? i find it hard to believe that this is the problem since my CPU is 1-2% with 784MB free of memory...when i preview the clip, processor jumps to 100%. I have tried manually closing programs (antivirus, indexing, etc.), but this doesn't seem to help.

2) I'll have to look if the wavy line is there, but I did read where you can hold down control and move the end of a clip, this does exactly what I'm looking for, but when i right click on a clip and go to properties and then manually set the playback speed to 0.5 or something like that it doesn't extend the size of the clp on the timeline...I'm wondering if it is a bug in the trial version?

3) I haven't tried a capture, I'm using 60 minute video clips I've captured into 1 big WMV files. I noticed in the hidden feature trimmer, when I bring a clip in it appears to auto-mark clips which should be sufficient for what I'm doing. I was hoping it would auto split them, but looks like if they are marked, I can easily select between two points and drag it to the timeline. Is there a way to auto split though?

Thanks!
Ben

1/ > i find it hard to believe that this is the problem since my CPU is 1-2% Frankly, so do I. My processor is less than half the speed of yours, but I've never had this problem. On the other hand, it seems to work for a lot of people. What sort of transitions are you using? Do you have any fx on those clips?

2/ You're right about the <ctrl> drag. I think this might be a feature! If you don't drag the clip, the duration stays the same but you can specify the rate? I'll have a play when I get home.

3/ I'll have to leave that to someone who uses the trimmer :-)

OK, it's a feature! If you <ctrl> drag the edges of your clip you can set the length, and the playback rate will be adjusted to whatever it takes. Or, you can set the rate in the general properties window and the time is left unchanged. If you now drag the right hand edge (without the <ctrl>) you can set the time the clip will play, without changing the playback rate. A notch will appear at the top of the clip once you've reached the end and begun to wrap round to the beginning.

Good to know, to me if the playback rate is changed, it should automatically adjust the time, seems like a bug.

With regard to the transitions, I do not have any effects and I'm just using the crossfade transition, nothing fancy at all. I wonder if it is because I have split a 1 GB WMV file into multiple segments and I'm transitioning between these and when it renders in real time it struggles to keep up? No clue, I know I've done this with other editing software and they never really struggled with it.

I spend to much of my life wrestling with software that tries to second guess me. To me it's a feature :-)

I 'd be surprised if the overall size is a problem, though it's simple to test! Beyond that I can't help you with the .wmv issue, I'm afraid. I still have Video Factory, which doesn't support it. Maybe when Sony release a downloadable version....
