I do this by selecting text only link and don't enter any text. Vary my mask overlay choice and sometimes use underline.

has a great discription on making highlight masks.

I used Paintshop Pro to make the highlight mask layer over the background image. (screen grab a still if motion background)
You can make the button highlight almost anything you want. Example:magnifying glass for a mystery
In DVDA2 you place an empty button, and resize the rectangle to surround the selection area.
