Hmmm. All i did was drop the transparent .gif file into a video track
above the main track. It worked perfectly. The main video shows through
the transparent areas of the .gif file.

Are you sure you have a transparency color set properly in the .gif file?

Two tips: png format and alpha channel transparent

The way to get transparency is to use a program like Paint Shop Pro (or something better--I'm cheap) and save the graphic as a png format. Any transparency you see in Paint Shop Pro will be transparent when you move the item into Vegas.

When you save the graphic as a png, go to options and click "Optimizer." Make sure "Alpha Channel Transparency" is selected. I beleive this is a default option.

If your graphic has a colored background, you may still need to chromakey. You can select a range of colors (they don't have to be blue or green to do this and those colors will be transparent.

Let me know if this works for you.

If you know your files have an alpha channel, and you want to use that alpha channel for transparency, right click the event>properties>media>alpha channel>set to premultiplied.
