travel set up?

Hi,
I do voicework and hit the road now and then vacationing. I used to bring my laptop, a Tascam USB interface, a Shure SM7 and some headphones. With this I could record in a hotel room (or sometimes in the car....nice voice accoustics!) edit, and deliver via email. I have used Vegas 6 for this. BUT...the USB has been a little noisy AND now the laptop is dead so....time to start over. Just wondering if anybody has used (and liked!) any combo of portable gear. Thanks for the input!
Steve

I think Geoff was referring to Shure X2U

I've not used it but it certainly looks portable!

The Sound Devices USBPre.. not quite as small or inexpensive as a XLR-to-USB in-line module, but oh, the sound .. Top shelf preamps and converters. Still small enough to carry around though.

RME Babyface poops all over everything else.

Small, Sounds better than anything under $1200 and is powered via your laptop's USB port.

The only downside, it only has 2 inputs unless you add more via adat and I'm guessing that would not be as portable, but it doesn't sound like you need more than 2 inputs anyway..

Only problem, according to the Sound Devices site, is that the Sound Devices USB pre will not work with a 64bit operating system, which includes all new Win and Mac laptops.

Perhaps they have updated the drivers, though.
