Trimmer - Stuttering Audio

I gather the trimmer playback is un-buffered. (Vegas 5.0b)
My system is very fast. SATA HDs running DMA @ 150/sec, Pentium 3.06, 2 GB RAM, M-Audio Delta 66 etc.
Why does my playback in trimmer stutter terribly when it starts reading from the HD?? It is highly irritating when clients are present and I am making selections in the trimmer for them to see. Every second or so, there is a bad audio stutter, whenever the HD light is on.
My audio buffers are set fairly high (I have tried lowering), my graphics acceleration is off (have tried all positions), soundcard does not share IRQ with graphics card.
There is no problem with timeline playback, other than the irritating low framerate using large preview window.

Please can someone offer a solution. Sony have come up with nothing.

Playback in the Trimmer and Explorer are unbuffered. If you're getting stutters, that would worry me about your drive throughput. There is something else happening. I have 24/96files that play from Trimmer and Explorer with no stutter.

Lower the buffers, set the Delta to auto sniff the buffer, and see what happens. Is the Delta set as your default soundcard in your Control Panel?

Thanks Spot.
1st, what does "sniff the buffer" mean?? I have tried a buffer size of 128 (very low)
2nd, what do you mean by "default card in control panel"?? Do you mean the device used by windows? If so, then yes. I use Cubase SX with this card and can play over 100 stereo tracks from this drive without problems.

Cheers,
