Trimmer timeline doesnt show actual movie length

When I open a movie, either avi or mpeg, in the trimmer window the timeline is not synchronous with the actual movie length
This results in strange shifts when I select a time range, the frames edited are not the actual frames as shown in the preview window
Anyone suggestions?

Do you edit in PAL or NTSC? Does the timeline format match the edit format (PAL or NTSC)?

The project is in PAL, when i set the properties of the moviefragment on the same, it does not make any difference
