Is there really much difference when editing in the trimmer vs. the timeline?
I currently have been using the timeline for most of my edits using the mark in and mark out to select video that I don't want and deleting it.
it's entirely personal. Speed and workflow seems to have overtaken the 'source window' or trimmer form of editing, but it is still used by some, including me from time to time. Whatever works best for you is what works best for YOU.
Depends on the type of project. I sometimes drag to timeline then drag the ends to select in and out points, but for big projects with 1 hour captured clips I find it much neater to use Trimmer to select the bit I want then take it to the timeline, or for long lasting projects I create and save Regions in Trimmer for later location in Vegas Explorer.
Dragging one hour to the timeline to find a two second event is very cumbersome, especially if it's to go in the middle of an almost finished programme.
I agree with Peter - depends on the project and your needs.
If you are looking for a small segment to put in a particular place in the project, by all means use the trimmer to find it.
If you want to extract all of the good pieces from a long clip, I'd place it on the timeline and delete all the stuff I didn't want. (Tsunami works great for this)
My workflow is project-directed. NOT the other way round.
I've learnt very quickly NOT to have hard and fast rules on this one. DON'T use a process if it is to cumbersome. Just because we CAN do something, we can elect NOT to do it. Hey, this is the beauty of Vegas . .. I've found greater creativity from "exploring" many and varied workflow methods.
What are my real drivers? Getting to the "thing" as soon as possible . . . The "thing" is that Golden Moment or Ah HAH! moment that we all experience . . . remember how you got there. Maybe even "write" some notes to yourself . .it all helps .. . I'm still learning . . the more I do, the confident and adept I become . . also "watching" a Vegas editor is wellll worth it . . I've just come back from the London Video Forum . . and I spent "much" watching Mr Michael Bryant from Madison demoing Vegas and Acid Pro . . . I did a lot of "Oh . . it's that simple .. HAH!" . . . . .
My advice? Do lots and lots of stuff. Do anything . . do any project don't wait . . you've got footage? Well? Go ahead and throw it about on the T/L and try everything .. GO On! . .Git on wiv it .. have fun . .
