Trimming an event in MS3

I am reading page 69 of the manual for MS3. It seems different than most NLE programs that I have used for trimming events.

What I am trying to do is edit a recorded (VHS tape) television show which I captured in MS3. I want to edit out the commercials and if I read the manual correctly, you are actually highlighting the part of the event that you want to keep and that everything else is deleted. WIth several places in a clip to delete the commercials, it might get kind of messy!!!

Am I right on this? Other programs you actually select the part that you want to delete and then delete it.

What am I missing here?

if you want to edit them out, you can capture, then display it in one of the video tracks... highlight the commercial and press delete... it will remove the highlighted selection and split the clip at that point.

try it.

insert a video, then highlight a portion, press delete. you should get two clips... split where you had it selected and have the selected portion deleted.

Thanks Mark. That was much easier than I thought and the book is confusing. I appreciate all your help. I only hope one day I can learn enough to help others.

Also, if you have "ripple edits" activated, the clips will move left to fill in the portion you deleted.

If you do not have "ripple edits" activated, the clips will remain in position and the segments you delete will leave gaps between clips.

Just so you'll know, and depending on what you're trying to accomplish.

When I press delete on the keyboard nothing happens. I have to click in on the drop out menu or or the delete button on the top tool bar.

Are you pressing backspace, rather than delete? Both "Delete" and "Del" work for me, but backspace doesn't.
