Trimming in PlayMemories--It Smart Renders

Perhaps it's common knowledge, but I just discovered that if you trim AVCHD footage from a Sony Handycam in PlayMemories, it will smart render the trimmed file. The trim function is pretty clunky, but it does seem to be frame accurate. Just trimmed 2 min off the front and 1 min off the end of a 11 min clip and it took about a minute to render. I've tried other software for trimming in the past, but oftentimes the trimmed files did not work well or at all in Vegas. It would seem pretty useful, especially for b-roll footage. Just thought I'd share.

Its predecessor PMB would do that too.

Another good thing is that during transfer from camera to computer, both utilities also concatenate the chunks of a long recording session that has been split at 2GB points.

And also changes the name of the file to its date-time code, much like HDV Split did for HDV files which I find very useful.

I heartily agree.

I now have a Panasonic camera. The equivalent utility is HD Writer AE, which also renames clips to date-time, but does NOT concatenate chunks. It adds a suffix number which clearly indicates which chunks need to be joined, however. Fortunately, Panasonic chunks are 4 GB (or less for the last one) not 2 GB as for Sony, so concatenation is less frequently required. Why they don't provide this function is a unfathomable to me.
