Trouble downloading files into Vegas Platinum 9

I previously had a Sony camera with mini-discs that downloaded perfectly. I now have a camera with internal hard drive memory and the PMB software provided with the camera seemed to produce files that were not compatible with Vegas. I have converted the files Into WMV but still I have no success as the Vegas program crashes constantly. Is there something I can do do solve this problem? I am non technical and in my mid 70's.
My HP computer's processor is 3.2 Ghz and it has 4GB memory.

What model is your camcorder? Do you know what format it records in?

Thank you for replying. The camcorder is a Sony SR68E and according to the manual the movie recording format is Video - MPEG -2PS and Audio - Dolby Digital 2 ch. The H.P. computer I am using is operating on Windows 7, 64 bit and has a processor of 3.2 Ghz and memory of 4 GB.
