Trying out Boris FX 7 and

I'm using Boris FX 7.0 (stand alone)....

1) The gray box for external monitor is grayed out in Boris FX, even though the monitor is working fine when I use Vegas. Am I correct in assuming that I would have to disable external preview in vegas properties before it would work with Boris or am I overlooking something here?

2) How do I render out a ten second segment of a snowing FX over a video clip for work in Vegas? I can only export one Targa frame at a time? Here again, I must be overlooking something. Shouldn't I now be able to have the full ten second snow effect clip on the Vegas timeline?

Thank you.

..1) if you're using the stand alone version(Keyframer), you can't view on an external monitor, it needs to reside in a host to do that, & not all hosts support that feature... & Vegas doesn't...

..2) unless BorisFX is installed as a plugin, in Vegas, you won't be able to render any Boris effect in Vegas.. I think you can take those rendered snow effect Targa files(with an alpha channel) & place them on a video track in vegas, & have it overlay on the video channel below it...

I used to use Boris FX but I now use Red 3GL.

Basically, Boris FX is a hack-job downgrade of Red. You may see several things that are available in Red, but are disabled in FX.

While it's nice that you can get a good amount of features for the money, I know I was disappointed to see it basically a hacked up version of Red. Not too professional looking. But, it does do the job.

Thanks.
That's what I thought, but when I export out of Boris as a Targa file (the only option I'm given), and import it in Vegas, I find that only ONE frame was rendered in Boris--despite that the movie video clip and clip duration in Boris was several seconds long.

..I'm sure kentwolf also remembers that BorisFX was the original software, & Red was created much later, as an upgrade with more features.. I would like to upgrade to Red or BCC...

..I think 1 frame is the default length.. the stand alone Boris Keyframer software can be loaded on any computer..

..I never tried this, as I have the BorisFX plugin & no need to use the standalone, but it looks like you will have to render 1 frame at a time(make sure the duration is the same as the clip you're using, so you have the right number of frames), & give each frame a unique name or number, sequential is easiest, & put them in a folder by themselves...then place them on the Vegas timeline on top of the clip you want to use...

..BorisFX is really meant to be used as a plugin, so that's why the Keyframer is crippled the way it is...very time consuming, but what the heck, it was free!...
