Trying to darken a certain area

I'm trying to darken only a part of the event but If I use SoFo's Video FX to do so it darkens the whole frame. How can I only darken certain areas?

mouse on the top of the video track, when u see a the 'finger pointer', drag it down and u will see video going darker as u pull down, then add points to where area u want to darken. or u can use video envolope.

Oh, I meant part of what is showing in the frame. For instance if I have a picture on a wall and I want to darken only the wall.. Can I do it?
