Turning subtitle track on and off

Widetrack wrote on 9/28/2008, 12:07 PM
I created a submenu to the main menu, added 2 empty buttons I named "Subtiitle On" and "Subtitle Off". I set their actions to Subtitle track 1 and subtitle Track "None" respectively.

No matter what I do, the only way I can turn the subtitle track on or off is to click the "Subtitle " button on the remote in the Preview DVD window and choose "None" or "1".

In the lower right corner of the preview window there's a readout that says "none" when I've clicked my "Subtitle Off" button. That's good. But When I click the "subtitle On" button, the word "None" disappears and the field is blank, instead fo indicating Subtitle Track ! is activated.

I don't think I can depend on my customers' remotes all having closed Captioning buttons, So I need to give them an on-screen way to turn the track on and off.

I get the sense that these buttons are not actually seeing my media or existing subtitle track. could that be possible?

Please give me some help on this.

Are you sure the subtitle field doesn't just say "1" (as opposed to Subtitle Track 1)? That's what mine does -- just show the number. Never seen it completely blank.

By all means, include the menu item to switch subtitle tracks, but I've yet to see a DVD remote without a Subtitle button. I doubt you'll find one with a CC button -- that's a function of the television and would be on the television's remote.

(Though I've heard tell of a DVD with CC, it's pretty rare.)

What Subtitle field do you mean? the one below the on-screen remote?

I know. This DVD is going to schools and libraries and they all need closed captioning. I'm anticipating the subtitle approach will work,.

Well, that is the one you mentioned in your initial post, so yes. :)

Yes. there is a static line reading "Subtitle Track:" and then the variable field that, in the case of this project, reads "None" when I click on my Subtitle Off button" or is blank. when I click on the "subtitle off" button

When you are setting the ACTIONS, your options are NO CHANGE, OFF, or a numerical entry (1-10) for the subtitle track.

How do you have your onscreen buttons set?

Dave:

I set the "Subtitle On" ' button to "1", the subtilte track where my subtitles are,

and the "Subtitle Off" button to "Off".

Is this incorrect?

Breaking news.

I figured out...well, stumbled on... the fact that if I set the Destination field to the movie itself, i.e., the MPG file, then the subtitles turn on and off just dandy, and the field below the onscreen remote even indicates "1-English' or words to that effect.

Only problem is that I'd like my customers to be able to go to the main menu and start the movie from there, like on a normal DVD.

If I set the destination to the main menu, or the setup menu where the subtitle buttons are, those don't work either.

I guess I am confused on your work flow.

Normally a DVD is set to start on a MENU. IN this case you would start on a MENU with two buttons, one linked to the MPG FILE video and one to another menu with the SUBTITLE BUTTON OFF AND ON options.

The subtitle OFF and ON buttons would link to the MPG file with the corresponding SET SUBTITLE Track option. Make sure your main menu SUBTITLE link is set to NO CHANGE.

If you are linking back to a MENU, that could be the problem. You are turning on the SUBTITLE track for a menu which doesn't have one.

No, he's not. The button's Destination setting and its Set Subtitle Track setting are completely independent. You can link to whatever you want since the Set Subtitle Track value is disc-wide. Meaning, if you have it set Subtitle Track #1, then any video you play after that will display its Subtitle Track #1 (if it has one).

Rob,

You are right. Sorry, not sure what I was thinking.

i also have a subtitle problem.
i have a film with 1 subtitle track
i have a settings menu, and there i have two button for subtitles:
one for activate TRACK 1
one for set subtitles to OFF

one more button for RESUME the film playing.
it seems that in preview mode and mediaplayer classic it works wonderful, but when i burn the disc and play it in my Chili dvd player bad things happen. Default is subtitle off, so when i play the film, no subtitle present. Goint into settings menu, change it to 1 and resume, subtitle appears. Great. But then going to menu, change subtitles to OFF, and resume the film SUBTITLE IS STILL THERE!

i checked many times the command, and yes the button says set subtitle track to off.

so, i dont know, whats happen here?

thx,
Marton

What are your subtitle settings for the RESUME film button?

of course:

No change
No change
No change

but on another player it work correctly!
So this is a player issue? Maybe.

But i dont remember, i have such a dvd film that i cannot switch subtitles correctly off.

Make sure you set the initial properties for subtitles (File -> Properties):

No, it doesn help either.
the player still show the subtitles.
but only this one player.

on panasonic dvd recorder, it works!
buggy player?

Marton:

that's basically what happens to me as well.

John:

So the basic properties should be Subtitle OFF?

the other thing is that when I click the subtitle button on the onscreen remote, it gives me a list of selections, and regardless which of my subtitle buttons I've clicked, I can turn subttles on and off with the remote.

I'm getting to that "to hell with this fancy-schmancy 'programming stuff just tell 'em to use the remote and be done with it" stage. This project needs to get wrapped up REALLY soon. If I could just rest assured (or just rest, for that matter) that pretty much everybody's remote has a subtitle button, that would determine my course of action.

But maybe Sony could...oh, well.

I'm not sure that this is exactly what you want, but I just tried the following:

1. Drag a movie with subtitles to a menu, then follow these instructions from Help to make the subtitles appear by default:

In the workspace, select the object for which you have created subtitles.

In the Button Properties pane, click the Action button.

Select the Set subtitle track control, click the button, and choose 1.

2. Drag the same movie to the same menu, and leave as is.

If I name the first drag "Subtitles On" and the second "Subtitles Off", users have a choice.
- in both cases the remote can be used to turn subtitles off or on again

Apologies if this is not what you're after.
