Tutorial #5 Masking Images and Quickie poll

BillyBoy wrote on 11/14/2002, 10:31 PM
Awhile back someone was asking about masking and having only part of an image colored, so I put together another little tutorial and also played around the the 3D filter while I was at it.

Quickie poll:

1. Just curious how high a resolution do you guys use when browsing the web? I was toying around with a gradient background which I set to 1280x1024 as high as my LCD monitor can go. Anybody go higher than that when web browsing?

2. You like or dislike transitions between web pages?

3. You like or dislike rollover buttons?

See examples of above on my little corner of the web:

Well, I can tell you I've got eyestrain at 1152 by 864 on a 15 inch monitor. don't want to go any higher than that.

Hate those transitions -- muddies things up and wastes brain frames waiting for the info to appear!

Rollover buttons are great!

Hey I just looked at the transition into your masking tutorial and you know what! That wasn't irritating at all. It was cool. It's the dissolves I hate!

By the way, I'm amazed at how much better my videos are looking now that I've used your color-correction tutorials. Thanks again.

Transitions? What transitions?
The computer I use for internet is a very old and tired machine and so it doesn't show me everything that goes on at those web sites. The resolution is set on 800x600 16 bit. I do have ADSL though, so rollover buttons work.
They are a drag when they contain information that you won't get if you don't put your mouse over them - like yours. If they don't, they may look pretty and add colour but are basically useless.
So unlike your tutorials: Highly useful and to the point. Neccessary!

About your trip to Arizona, you could have used a dot or any other image from a font (dingbat or something) in the text generator. It could add some detail (like: if you did one stretch by car and one on foot you could use appropriate images) and would be just as easy to handle. I've done a test flight :-) with a plane:
It's here if you want to have a look: Mapflight

1 - 1280x1024 ... for now. Upgrading to dual 1600x1200 as soon as my budget allows. Can't ever have too much desktop real estate.

2 - Absolutely HATE them. As far as i'm concerned, such transitions are a total waste of time and bandwidth. I usually stick with my trusty ol' Netscape 4.79 which pretty much ignores them.

3 - Mostly ok. I've seen some that are so large and fancy that they take forever to load on dialup. Simple ones provide good visual feedback if done well.

If it takes time, even a fraction of a second, don't do it. Cable just ain't what it used to be. Slower every day, and both boring and frustrating to wait.

Buttons, yes, if FULLY self explanatory without having to roll over them first.

BB:

1) I use 1280x1024

2) I don't mind the transitions - visually appealing - reminds me of a VV transition [g]

3)rollover buttons?? - educate me a bit - If you mean the buttons going from one tuturial to the next, they are fine. If you mean the image change when the cursor hovers over the "tutorial one" or "tutorial two" button - those are fine as well.

I DO like the menu choice you have provided - one no longer *must* step through the tuts. Great job

1280 x 1024 on the 19"
1024 x 768 on the 15"

The transitions are fine. I can take them or leave them, I will soon be DL'ing individual pages anyway. On a 56K they were not really all that slow.
Just rented the latest Star Wars II DVD, and yes...there they were....Iris and horizontal wipes.

The buttons are cool, and they change instantly. Maybe Tor has a good point though.

Congratulations!
&
Thank You!

Thanks guys for the feedback. I'm not that hot on page transitions for web pages either, just messing around to see how it looked.
