Tutorial on using Behringer BCF2000 for Vegas

MarkWWW wrote on 2/28/2007, 10:16 AM
I've finally got round to writing up in one document all the various bits of information that are needed when trying to set up the Behringer BCF2000 Control Surface for use with Vegas.

From time to time people post messages hereabouts concerning the problems they are encountering trying to get this working and it's obviously something that can give people trouble so while most of the required information can be found by doing a search of these forums I thought it would be helpful to collect it all into one document and add some illustrations as well.

You can find it here.

Hope it's of some help to someone.

Mark

PS. If anyone has any suggestions on how to improve the document please feel free to let me know.

Oh wow, THANKS. I haven't looked at it yet, but thanks.

I really should tak ethe trouble to figure it all out for myself, but it seems I don't have the time or NRG.

May I forward the link to my PCDAW Yahoogroup, and the BC2000 one ?

Feel free to forward it wherever it will do any good.

But it is specifically about getting the BCF to work with Vegas so it won't really have much useful to say to a more general DAW audience.

thanks for this..i tried linking from the acid thread to Nick's tutorial, as well as the small program that shows the channels, etc on the bcf, but both links are bad. Was his tutorial the same as yours? Also, any idea where that little app went to?

No, Nick's tutorial wasn't the same as mine, though it would have covered much the same ground. I remember reading it at the time but I don't seem to have kept a copy of it. I presume that means I didn't think it contained anything I didn't already know. But that doesn't mean it might not be very helpful to anyone else, of course.

Unless someone hereabouts has kept a copy of Nick's tutorial I presume you would have to contact him to get hold of it. But that may be a bit tricky as he doesn't seem to be around any more. He hasn't posted here for a number of months and the domain registration for the website he linked to has been allowed to lapse.

The "little app" was just a hacked version of Behringer's BCFView applet that I mention in my document. It didn't have any increased functionality over the standard version, someone had just hacked the display to put the numbers 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 along the bottom - some people felt that made it easier to see which track was which.

Thanks Mark..his email bounced as well.I guess I will have to figure it out from the version you posted..it seems as though that would be easy enough.

while i have your attention..not to hijack this thread...have you looked at the Novation controller as well.. as a possible alternative to the Behringer? $100 more, but with pads for drums and their automap feature. I have been searching for a current response from Peter et al re this and Acid (would be great for Vegas as well..) but it seems to have tailed off last year regarding support from Sony.

I use Acid and Stylus, along with a few soft synths and could really use the convenience the automap seems to offer.

I've looked vaguely at the Novation controllers.

At the moment I think it is a non-starter as far as Vegas and/or Acid is concerned since it does not currently, as far as I can see, emulate the MCU at all. As you know, PCH indicated that they were looking at including support for the Novation controllers in future versions of Acid/Vegas, but until that day comes (if it ever does) I'd say you were better off looking at something that is known to work - a real MCU if you can afford it, or a BCF if you're cheap like me.

That hacked version is available ex BC2000 yahoogroup file section . Also a 'Big' version for 1600+ pixel-wide screens.

I'm still having trouble with Pan, which operates only intermittantly.

Also Mark, I notice you also have a Tranzport fitted. On my system(s) if I have both the BCF and Tranzport running, the display is blank on the Tranzport - does yours do this ?

Also can arm tracks but the 'Tranzport transport' rec button does not start Vegas recording (by itself, or with Play). Same on two machines/installs with or without BCF. How does yours go ?

Hmm, that's a mystery. I've not come across that and I can't really think of anything that would account for it.

Ah no, I don't have a Tranzport, I'm afraid. The option to add one is showing on one of the screenshots in my document which is probably why you thought I had one, but that's just a normal part of what Vegas shows during the configuration of an external controller, whether you've actually got one or not.

I'll have to leave answering the rest of your queries to someone who actually has a Tranzport.

But I can confirm that I can arm tracks and start recording using the BCF quite happily.

The Tranzport problem turned out to be a faulty button ! Now to fix it....

It seems the Tranzport 's display will co-exist happliy with the BCF or other devices if it is first on the list in Vegas/Acid.
