The .wmv codec available in VF has the following presets:

-28.8kbps video
-56kbps video
-100 kbps video
-256kbps video
-512 kbps video
-1 mbps video

The first (28.8kbps) mentioned above would give you the poorest quality, but the smallest sized file after render, the last (1mbps) would give you the best quality, but the largest file after render.

There is no customization of these templates for Video Factory. If you want advanced customizable settings for this codec you should take a look at Vegas Video: http://www.sonicfoundry.com/Products/NewShowProduct.asp?PID=280

I did look at both before deciding to buy VF 2.0 after considering the quality of the UI and price, on which Vegas didn't compare favorably with VF.

But why would you allow changing rendering options with mpeg and avi's, but not the other video formats? I can't be the only other VF user that's not happy with the existing templates for quicktime, realmovie and wmv. Windows' own Movie Maker gives a couple of 768kbps templates, but I'd really like somewhere between 768 and 1Mbps (which gives me the 740M), maybe 900kbps.

I guess I'm not too thrilled with buying a product and then having to resort to some other free tool to do something I expected the one I bought to do in the first place.

As much as I like Video Factory I have to agree. I too always seem to end up using a "free" tool to finsh what VF can't. I think Sonic Foundy misjudged the importance of VCD and SVCD and so far left us wanting. Take a look at the vcdhelp forum and you'll see these two formats account for a HUGE share of the traffic. People want to burn VCD and SVCD at higher bitrates or what's the point of bothering in the first place. Yes, DVD burners are coming down in price but I doubt they will hit main steam for at least another year to 18 months.

If limiting the bitrate is some technical issue because of the VF engine, I wish it was explained because I can't see any reason to first limit users to a single CODEC for MPEG, (Ligos) and if that wasn't bad enough not being able to use a higher bitrate. So I feel about MPG as you do about your favorite rendering formats.

Again Video Factory is a GREAT editor, and you get a lot of bang for your bucks, but after all the time you spend editing and tweaking to not be able to select the codec YOU want to get the best possible results is disapointing.

Hey WVG,
Check the latest, build 91. They seem to have added several presets for bitrate up to 15000 or you can type your own custom rate. I haven't actually encoded anything yet so I can't say that they're truthful, but the option is there now.

Hi guys,

Danimal, I think wvg is referring to the customization of MPEG1, the format for VCDs, not MPEG2, the format for DVDs. Yes, the Ligos codec for MPEG2 can go to a much higher bitrate, but the end file would be too large for a standard CDr media.

To both of you, and anyone else reading this post, your input and ideas are always appreciated. Please pass your ideas for future product upgrades on to the engineers directly. They want to know what you are thinking. You can make product suggestions at this link:
