Two Videos Edited With Vegas

Jay Gladwell wrote on 4/30/2005, 3:00 PM

Here are a couple of nicely done little videos by Sonny Dhinsey, a university student studying Media Culture and Communication. Rather than blather on, I'll let the videos speak for themselves.

The first, "Urban Context," was shot in South East London.

The second, "The Water Pump," was shot, I assume, in India.

Enjoy!

WOW, Jay. My hats off to Mr. Dhinsey. Those were two fabulous clips. I usually watch about 10-15 seconds but I watched the entire length. What a storyteller!!!! And the storyline was awesome. I felt exhausted at the end of "The Water Pump". Just a beautiful array of sounds and visuals.....

Very impressive. Thanks for providing the links. My compliments to Sonny Dhinsey.

Curious how you came to be involved, Jay?

Liked Urban Context and really loved The Waterpump.

For Urban Context I found myself liking the song and not paying as much attention to the video as I should.

The Waterpump? I'd be happy to loop it for a while. It's a great environmental piece for a gallery or kiosk.

Ho! . . . Spectacular . .. A real artist with much to offer . . . . The thrown focus .. the narratives . . . the appropriate use of the FXs and a general sense of "craft" coming through - excellent!

Sonny Dhinsey? Whoever you are . . very well done!

From an inspired,

Graham Bernard

More of this, please !
(last time I saw something related to Vegas that impressed me the same way was by Earthrisers on Chienworks site)

I really, really enjoy this kind of work.
Fresh, moder n with touches of risk-taking and some kind of willing to break a few rules all wrapped up in an obvious mastering of "what to do to achieve"

Hats off , mr Dhinsey and thanks Jay for the pointer !

I'm glad all of you so far have liked what Mr. Dhinsey has done. I was very taken by his work--the kind of person you'd like to have on your team!

One of the things that intrigues me is how his videos have their own voice, as Futz pointed out. He's allowing his cultural influences to come through, rather than trying to suppress them, and this I believe, contributes to the uniqueness and freshness of his work!

What camera did you use for the shots? The clips are most impressive.
Jay Gladwell wrote on 5/2/2005, 5:02 AM

Rene, I neither shot nor edited these videos. I was simply providing the links. But in answer to your question, the videos were shot with the Canon XL1s and edited with Vegas 5.

Wow, really first rate stuff, enjoyed both very much. I agree with all the comments above.

Such interesting footage, beautifully shot and edited. Lovely music on "Urban" and the sound FX on "Water Pump" really added a lot.

Both of these were so evocative that I felt I had taken a little trip to these locales and saved thousands in airfare.

It also seemed to me that they could have come from two different filmmakers.

I aspire to creating something like this.

Thought I would bump this interesting thread back up to the top.
Probably a few people who missed it on the first pass.

Jay, you didn't answer my question about how you came into contact with these videos.
Jay Gladwell wrote on 5/3/2005, 5:04 AM
Rex, I didn't catch that queston first time 'round.--my apologies!

From time to time, I do searches and visit other forums related to video and film production just to see what other folks are doing in an effort to seek out inspiration, new ideas and how others work. Frankly, most of what I see isn't all that good, but I keep looking. When I came across this young man's work on the DV Info forum, I felt like I had found "a diamond in the rough."

Granted, he's not doing anything monumental, but his work is truly unique and I believe he will only get better with time and experience. I look forward to seeing more of his work in the future!
