Ultramaximizer not loud enough.

I have just picked up the ultrmaximizer plugin for
normalizing, but am not having any luck on using it.Any help
would be great.Their help is pretty leaning so I figued i
would try here as well.I am trying to get max normalization
of a file.Like in saw you also choose apeak limiter setting
to use to get a file that looks like the grass has been
mowed. This is what I am after.Any thoughts or any thoughts
on a sonicfoundry product that will do as simple?
thanx gang!

David -
I have the Ultramaximizer and like it but you do have to be careful.
The way to get that squared-off, flat-top waveform look you want is
to make sure the file you are maximizing is already pretty hot - try
normalizing first, compressing a little and then slam it with the
Maximizer (if that's what you want) going for a -4 to -6 db limiter
(try some of the presets. Sometimes I do less and do it twice. It can
sound pretty crunchy aftee that, though.
Hope that helps.
Charles.

David:
There's a way to get what you want with Waves' Ultramaximizer:
Try these settings (I'm assuming you have a good sound level to begin
with):
Input: 0.0
Out Ceiling: 0.0
Release: 1.0
Attenuation: 0.00

Quantize: 16 bits (or 20, depending on your file's resolution).
Dither: type2
Shaping: ultra.

Now, play your file and bring the "THRESHOLD" down until you begin to
see ALMOST steady RED peaks on the OUT CEILING meters. Apply.
This should ensure a VERY hot signal, but if not satisfactory enough,
you can REPEAT dose as needed.

good luck.

Victor.

I'd recommend the Steinberg ME Loudness Maximizer if you have the
opportunity to acquire it. It's the most wreckless, hardcut,
merciless bitch of a signal slaughterer I've ever encountered. I've
on several occasions totally crunched my dynamic range down to about
2-3 db, and it still sounds pretty OK (by MTV or German television
standards =).

Try it.

I would usually leave the destruction of dynamic range to a mastering
lab, so someone else's head would be on a stick, but I reralize there
are things that wont get mastered...

So here are some things I do to have a "modern sounding" dynamic
range.

for an el-cheapo solution, you could use just the plugz in soundforge
or vegas....use the SF graphic dynamics and build yourself a "multi-
knee" compressor....start with one point of 3 to 1 at about -12dB and
another point of 6 to 1 at -4 to - 6 db depending... now normalize
that....then run it thru the L1 using the preset " 16 bit final
master highest resolution" if youre not doing anything else to
it...or " 16 bit pre-master(edit ready)..It will be quite loud then.

a better way would be to use the amazing, stupendous, Prosoniq
Dynasone plugin for VST....this is an UNBELIEVABLE plug, one of the
automix settings should do just fine, and the refresh synthesizer
really adds that shiny glossy sound to your mix...if that's not loud
enough, then run it thru the L1...
