Unable to burn DVD using Sony's DRX-500UL External DVD burner

efiebke wrote on 2/18/2003, 11:22 AM
Attempting to burn my first . . . ever. . . DVD project using DVD Architect 1.0. The renduring and the preparation process seemed to go fine (except it went extremely slowly - over 13 hourse . . . is this normal?????)

At any rate, when it came time to burn the DVD, I recieved and error message. This message isn't too unlike the message recieved at mentioned in previous threads here. Except I'm using a "compatible" DVD burner. (?!?!?)

Here's the error message:

Unknown Error (8004e 002h)

Here's my computer set up:

Dell Precision Workstation 420
Pentium III 733 mHZ
1 GB DDRAM
2 Internal Hard Disk Drives (both at 7200 rpm)
SIIG 1394 card
SIIG USB 2.0 card
ADS 1394 PYRO Hard Disk case containing one 120 GB Maxtor 7200 HDD
MOTU 2408 mkII sound device
MOTU Midi Timepiece AV midi/sync device
Plextor 12/10/32s external SCSI CD Burner
Sony DRX-500UL external DVD burner (via USB 2.0 port)
Sonic Foundry's DVD Architect 1.0
Sonic Foundry's Vegas 4.0
various other midi/audio recording programs.

I use the external 120GB IDE via 1394 Pyros drive for all video projects. I also use the SIIG 1394 card to capture and print to tape DV information. However, I'm not utilizing any other program/device when preparing the DVD. I disconnect and/or turn off anything that might cause problems (USB based internet, internal sound card, a bunch of XP stuff that I don't need, etc)

Hope I'm providing enough information.

Thank you ahead of time for your help!

Howdy, Edward,

The tech and customer support folks are working very hard to fix this bug. It's hitting "compatible" burners and ones that ought to be. My tech support contact expects a solution shortly. He's not kidding, this could cost them business.

You can cut down on render time by using Vegas to capture your video. If you must use video from other sources, you might consider "preparing" it, but not burning it until the fix is posted. We did a 10-hour render yesterday, and decided that it is something best set up to run at bed time.

Stand by for news!

Cheers,
Peyton

Peyton:

Thanks for the reply.

Will sit patiently. I have a ton of other projects ot complete anyhow. It's just a bit frustrating to actually attempt to make my first DVD (have done tons of musical CD's). . . and have it not work. . . :(

Oh well. . .

I even upgraded the firmware to the DRX-500UL to 1.0g. Still no go. . .

P. S. The Vegas 4.0 program is just simply wonderful! Just recieved Pixelan's SpiceMASTER 2. If you haven't already done so, check it out! It rocks!

I have the same external Sony DVD burner, and I also use an external Firewire drive for most all of my video work. I'm now hesitant to buy DVDA until this is resolved. I've been saving my pennies and hoped to do the upgrade before the price goes up March 15th.

I'll be monitoring this thread closely.

Hey, they've got a beta patch for this bug that seems to lick it pretty good. Should be available very shortly, like within days, maybe hours. I'm a user, not an SF guy, so I can't make promises on their behalf.

Besides the bug that hits some folks and not others, this software is *awesome*. You will not be disappointed.

Cheers,
Peyton

FWIW, I have the same burner with a FW drive as well and have had no problems with DVD-A.

Hi Peyton -

Did SoFo said how they're going to notify users of the beta-patch availability?

Thanks!

i use this drive and had no problem from a thinkpad.could it be related to the dell or the operating system?

I'm wondering if my problem is file-size related. I tried burning the directory and files generated by DVD Architect using another program (don't remember off hand, I'm at work now and away from my personal computer). That program said that the file size was too big. . . buy only about 300 or so mb's . . .and couldn't/wouldn't burn the copied files.

I'm going to try adjusting the file size again within DVD Architect utilizing its "optimizing" feature and see how that may work out. I am, however, going to have to wait until I can spare several hours for the computer to re-render the project using the adjusted optimized settings. I've got way too much stuff to do and can't afford to tie up my computer while it thinks and renders. (Ahh. . . to have a Pentium IV 3.06GB processor or two!)

I've upgraded the firmware to the DRX-500UL. I also had it 'tested' and all came out o.k.

Glad to read that the DVD Architect & DRX-500UL works for other people's systems! I'm hopeful!

I also have sony drx-500ul external using firewire... the person using usb2.0 should switch over to firewire... usb polls the system to often to suit me... btw I burn just fine using DVDA.

I'm having the same problem. I have optimized my project to 100%. But in doing so it makes the file size 4.862 gig. I have lowered it to 4.642 and am re-trying the burn. I'll cross my fingers and let you know.

Just burnt my first few DVD's using Sony's DRX-500UL. All DVD's playback on my computer's DVD player (Sony DRX-500UL) Everything is fine now!

Sonic Foundry's tech support was kind enought to email me a patch for DVD-A which seemed to help the program work with the DRX-500UL. It was either the patch or the fact that I optimized the project to be slightly less than 100% (I think I didn't optimize it enough the first time) . . . or both that worked. Who knows?!? Bottom line, DVD Architect is working just fine now! My thanks to Sonic Foundry's tech support!!!

Does anyone know where I can download that patch?
