Unable to capture HDV

Brinx wrote on 12/1/2009, 2:05 PM
I have a Sony HVR-M15AU conencted to a Vista PC running Sony Vegas Pro 9.0c via firewire. I can capture Mini-DV just fine, when I try to capture HDV, I don't show a device to capture from. None of the defailt settings on either hardware or software have been changed. What do I need to do to capture HDV files from this player to Vegas Pro?

Go into your camera settings and make sure downconvert is off and your output is set to HDV. Then reconnect your camera.

If you are using the standard / default setup for Vegas then you are using the "external" video capture application, which doesn't support HDV.

Try the following:

1. Open "Options"
2. Select "Preferences"
3. Select the "Video" tab
4. Uncheck "Use external video capture application"
5. Click "Apply"

Now try your capture again

Downconvert is OFF and ouput is set to AUTO and selects HDV. I tried setting ot HDV and still no luck.

The box to check for using an external video capture is not checked, still no luck. I tried checking it for the heck of it and verified that it wsa checked, when I run capture again, it removes the check from the box.

1) Make 100% certain you are using the correct capture program for capturing HDV. When you go File>Capture you should get a dialog box that gives you the choice of DV or HDV/SDI. Choose the latter.

2) The camera must have the firewire interface in HDV, Auto will never work for capturing as it defaults to DV and will only switch to HDV after the tape is rolling.

3) In the capture pane try clicking the Reconnect Icon, it's the square with two circular arrows. For some reason most of the time when you launch the capture it does not connect first go. It can also easily lose the connection too, if Vegas looses focus for example.

4) Try another firewire cable as a last resort. I've had instances of faulty cables that'd work with some devices and not others. One frantic support caller had three faulty cables.

Not sure then.

When "unchecked" Vegas should use it's internal capture routine(s) which is how you capture HDV and it has a completely different interface. For one thing, it doesn't open in a seperate window and it has fewer controls. The external app can only capture standard DV.

Try clicking the capture icon with your camera turned off. You should see the following prompt:

Select the HDV option and you can then turn on your camera and choose the "reconnect" option to access your camera.

I have double-checked all settings and I think I forgot to mention that this is a new setup and has never worked yet. I have been able to stream off MiniDV, this is my first attempt to stream off HDV. I am sellecting HDV as my capture option, but no device has ever shown up in the list of devices. When I look at the Windows Device Manager, it shows up under Imaging Devices as "Sony DV Tape Recorder/Player". The reconnect option is greyed out and therfore cannot be clicked to reconnect.

Could this be the problem? WHen I insert the tape it shows HDV 60i, when reading through the manual it shows that the recorder/player will output to 1080/24P, 1080/30P or 1080/25P throught the iLink channel.

Disregard previous post, I have figured it out. On the front of the M15AU, then "INPUT SELECT" switch ha dto be set in the HDV/DV position and it wasn't. After changing htat and powering the unit up, the correct drivers installed and it is working now. I hate it when I overlook the obvious. Thanks for all of the suggestions and help.
