Unable to Capture HDV From Sony HDR-FX1 in Vegas 6 on Either of Two Computers

tnw2933 wrote on 4/18/2005, 2:48 PM
Today I purchased and downloaded Vegas 6.0a and installed it on my 2.8 GHZ P4 machine and my Xeon dual 3.6 GHz Xeon workstation. There were no problems in the installs on either machine. Vegas 6 opens without error messages on both machines, and both machines will capture DV video when my FX1 is set to convert the HDV and output DV on its firewire output. However, when I try and capture HDV output from my HDR-FX1 on either machine, I get the same error message: "The device 'Microsoft AV/C tape subunit' device cannot be opened. Now device manager on both machines shows the Microsoft AV/C subunit is working properly. I hear the expected XP tone when turning on the FX1 to signal that it has been recognized. I am running Windows XP SP2 with the latest Windows updates on both machines. Finally, HDConnect (which I purchased form Sony in December works fine, captures HDV video and recognizes the HDV output from the FX1 without any problems on both machines.

What am I doing wrong that I cannot capture HDV output from the FX1 in Vegas 6.0a? I hope that I have overlooked something simple becuase the ability to capture HDV directly within Vegas 6.0 was the single most improtant feature to me in this upgrade.

Another issue that I had with Vegas 6.0a on my Xeon is that I cannot get the Preview on External Monitor to recognize that I have dual monitors (two 23 in. HP L2335 LCD monitors). I am running this machine with an nVidia 6600GT video card with 128 MB of video RAM. I have set the machine up for horizontal spanning on both monitors and this is working properly. I have installed the very latest nVidia driver posted only last week. However, when I select the Preview Device in Vegas Options, I get "No device found". Again I don't know what else to do here to use my second HP L2335 monitor as a preview monitor?

If anyone can help me with either of these two issues, I would be extremely greatful. Thank you in advance.

Re: the HDV capture issue - The camera should be listed as Sony D-VHS Device or something simliar. Bring up Device Manager, right click on the Microsoft AV/C Tape Subunit, choose Update Driver. Choose to the Advanced option, to manually pick the driver. On the next screen uncheck the option "Show only compatible hardware". Scroll down the manufacturer list to Sony, then on the right you should see the Sony D-VHS option. Choose that and then try it again. Those instructions are from memory so they may not be exact.

For the extmon preview issue, make sure the "Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor" check box is selected on the Settings tab or the Display Properties dialog (Start > Settings > Control Panel > Display). Not sure if that is available when set to horizontal spanning, for NV cards it may need to be in DualView mode.

When you get the "device cannot be opened" error, are you using Vegas' new (internal) capture window or are you using VidCap?

The new capture window is the one that supports HDV capture and you must first enable it in the Video tab of Vegas' application preferences... Uncheck the box that reads "Use external capture application". Then, when you launch video capture from within Vegas, the new capture window will appear. You can then select the HDV camera from its preferences dialog or device menu.

mmmmm........ so live capture of m2t files with the FX1 in Camera mode I see.
Patrick are you listening?
SO many new things....... havent checked for scopes yet but it does capture the m2t file of the live feed.
Back to the lab...........
Love all this new stuff ... what a MAJOR Milestone of improvements and features.
<edit>
No scopes on HDV capture but I can work with the possiblities this provides.

Is this internal capture supposed to work with all cameras? Can't currently get it working with mine.

Anyone know if the scopes will work with a live feed?

No scopes with the live feed, I updated my post. but still a cool ability! IMO

I want to thank all who responded to my problem of capturing HDV. Thank goodness I was not the only one to encounter this difficulty getting HDV capture to work. SonyBP, many thanks for your suggestion. Once I took these simple steps. HDV capture works perfectly.

Regarding the Display on Secondary Monitor problem, it is necessary to switch my display setting in nVidia desktop manager to Dual View. The device then shows up and the display is quite spectacular on my HP L2335 monitors.

Congratulations to all of those at Sony who have made Vegas 6.0 possible. Your work IS appreciated. Now I am back to editng on your terrific software.

The internal capture window currently only supports HDV cameras & decks and SDI (SD and HD) via Decklink cards.

SonyBP and/or SonyPJM,

When I go to update the driver and select Sony on the left, it shows only one driver, 'Sony 1394 CCM-DS250 Desktop Camera' on the right. Where do I find the D-VHS driver?

I am running Windows 2000, recently updated.

My problem is I do not have a device called - Microsoft AV/C Tape Subunit in my hardware manager list.

I can use the firewire to do standard DV captures but not HDV.
ANy ideas???

Go to Control Panel>System>Hardware>AVC Subunit with no driver Right click to Update Driver Tell Windows you'll locate driver yourself.
Browse to the Sound, Video, Game Controllers.
In there, you'll find two Sony driver options, choose the top one.
In there, you'll find two Sony driver options. Choose the upper one.

If you don't see this, then the camera isn't being recognized as anything at all. I'd be checking cable.
What happens when you plug camera into Firewire port and turn on the camera? Anything?

In my hardware list I have a catagory called image devices.
The sub catagory is 'Microsoft DV camera and VCR'
This is what is being used for standard DV control and capture which is working.

When I go thru the moves to change that driver, I can find no sony manufacture listed in the list...hence no sony driver.

Like I've said.....
Right click the device.
Choose update driver.
tell Windows you'll find the driver yourself.
Look for compatible devices in Sound, Video, Game Controllers
In there, you'll see two Sony options. Choose the top one.
In there, you'll see DVHS drivers. That'll get you going.
I'm assuming you're using Windows XP
edmellnik wrote on 7/28/2005, 5:45 PM
No I am on WIndows 2000.

The options you mentioned are not there.
Possibly may have to have Sony walk we thru it
but thanks for the try.
