Unable To Render a wmv9 In Vegas 6

I am running Vegas 6 on a dual 3.6 GHz Xeon system with 2.0 GB of RAM, The mother board is a Supermicro X6DA8-G2. I prepared a 25 minute project form footage captured by my Sony FX1 and the footage was captured with no problems in Vegas 6 using the Vegas internal HDV capture module. I used Gear Shift to convert the m2t files to DV proxy files, did all of my editing of the project, and then used GearShfit to switch back to the m2t files. I then rendered the project to a standard definition widescreen DV mpeg file, took this into DVD Architect 3 and prepared a video DVD that played perfectly on my DVD player. So far so good...but today I tried rendering the exact same project to a wmv9 file using the templates supplied with Vegas 6. No matter which template I choose, about 5 minutes into the rendering process I get a message that rendering cannot continue because the system is low on memory. I have increased the page file sizes on my system drive, and I have monitored the memory use in Task Manager during the first few minutes of the rendering. The available memory never gets lower than about 135 MB. I don't understand why the rendering is stopping, and I don't therefore know what to do aobut it. Again I did not have this problem rendering the exact same project to widescreen DV mpeg files for use in DVD Architect. I also have never had a problem suing this Xeon work station torender to wmv9 files in Vegas 5.0 which I still have installed However, I don't appear to have any way in Vegas 6 to render a wmv HD file which I would like to do in order to view the project using my Avellink DVD player which can play wmv9 HD files.

Has anyone successfully rendered a project with m2t files to the wmv9 format in Vegas 6?

If anyone has any suggestions, I would be most appreciative. Thank you in advance for responding.

Tom

P.S. Right now I am rendering the project to the Sony YUV format. I will then drag this into Vegas 6 and try and render it to a wmv9 HD format.

Forget the PS. Rendering to the Xony YUV codec brought aobut a complete crash of Vegas 6 after a few minutes. I am now trying to render to the 1080i intermediatary format and that seems to be working (fingers crossed!).

Am I the only one that has tried rendering HDV to wmv9 HD files or am I just the only one having this problem? Spot, or anyone, any suggestions would be appreciated.

One more try on getting a response from anyone else who has tried to render wmv9 files from Vegas 6.0a. Has anyone succeeded indoing this? I have worked all weekend trying everything I could think of. but I always get an error message or sometimes Vegas 6.0a just shuts down. This is the only problem I have had with Vegas 6.0a to date, and I would really like to resolve it.

Thanks in advance for responding.

I have tried and succeeded in rendering a wmv9 file from an m2t project. It was a short project, less than 2 minutes, as it was a test and I have only a few minutes of m2t footage available to me. The render did finish and I rendered it in two different wmv9 hd resolutions. Probably doesn't help much but I feel your pain in getting some, any, feedback.

Have you tried just rendering to straight uncomp. avi w/Vegas, then using the free windows wmv encoder to encode to wmv?

I just use vegas (4) to create avis, then use other programs to create compressed-format videos..

Folks,

Many thanks for taking the time to respond. I was beginning to feel like a lost lamb on this problem.

Gus, thanks for letting me know of your success on a 2 minute project. My project is about 25 minutes in length and when I try and render to a wmv9 file, the render goes on for about 30-40 minutes before I get the "System is low on physical memory" message. It is not a heat problem since both my system and cpus are well within normal range when I check them with the Supermicro monitor. (I have four huge fans in this system so it always runs quite cool.)

I did try rendering to a straight uncompressed 1080i Hd avi, but that crashed Vegas 6.0a within only a few minutes after starting the rendering process.

Epirb, I have tried rendering to a 72p wmv HD file as well, and I got the same "system is low on physical memory" error message.

There is no problem with the memory on this machine. I have used various memory checkers and the memory checks out fine.

The only thing I can think of to try, is to uninstall and reinstall Vegas 6.0a.

Again, thank you all for your suggestions and help.

I believe I have at last solved the problem of rendering wmv9 files in Vegas 6.0a on my dual 3.6 GHz Xeon machine. I uninstalled Vegas 6.0a, re-downloaded Vegas 6.0a and reinstalled the program again. I selected two minutes of the project to render to the default wmv9 Hd format. It took 27 minutes to render this 2 minute section of the project, but it rendered it flawlessly with no error messages. During this 27 minutes of rendering, I used Task Manager to keep an eye on the memory usage. During the render, the available RAM never dropped below 695 MB and was usually in the 800-900 MB range. This was in contrast to my rendering of this exact same segment of the project before the Vegas reinstall during which the available RAM dropped as low as 127 MB.

So what caused the problem? I'll probably never know, but I do know that in creating this project I raised the RAM for Dyanmic RAM Preview in Preferences to 700 MB. I did not think this had any effect on normal rendering but perhaps it does. After the VEgas reinstall I left teh Dynamic RAM Preview set to the default 16 MB. Of course, my iniital download and install may have had one or more corrupted files which had no effect until I tried to render to wmv9. Whatever the reason, things are looking brighter now. I'll cross my fingers and attempt to render the entire project to wmv9 tonight.

For anyone who has been following this thread, I want to close it by saying that I have finally successfully rendered my 25 minute HDV project to wmv9. The solution to the problem was to uninstall and reinstall Vegas 6.0a. I have no idea why this solved the problem. My original install of Vegas 6.0a had shown no problems until I tried to render to wmv9. In fact I had even used the orignal install to render to widescreen SD DV and burned a video DVD in DVD Architect without any problems. However, when I tried to render the same project to wmv9, I ket getting the memory low warning message and rendering would stop. After the uninstall and reinstall of Vegas 6.0a, I was able to render the project over 5 hours last night with no problems.

In my original install of Vegas 6.0a, I had (in Preferences) increased the RAM available for dynamic RAM previews to 700 MB) whereas after the reinstasll I left this set at the default 16 MB. Perhaps that made it impossible to render to the wmv9 format in teh first install, but I have not idea why this should be so. Other than this, I can think of no reason why the reinstall solved the problem, but I am happy that it did.

Many thanks to those who responded for their encouragement and suggestions.

Tom
