Unable to render .mov quicktime

EricJT wrote on 11/17/2009, 9:16 PM
I have ver 9b on Vista. I can render other formats but when I try to render a .mov quicktime the progress bar moves to the end instantly and nothing saves to the target folder. I'm using the defaults for .mov format. No matter what template I use it's the same. It does save the .mov.sfl file, but that is just 1kb.

The source media brought into the project is from a dvd of a client, as a .vob file mpeg-2 fromat. 720x480x32. It says it is lower field first, pixel AR is .9091 ntsc dv and frame rate is 29.97 ntsc.

Any ideas? I'm very new to this. Thanks.

The default Quicktime is uncompressed I believe, is this what you really want? What kind of usage are you trying to do with your exports? Is it the web, another DVD, casual playback?

Make sure your file path isn't really long. QuickTime renders can't handle file paths longer than around 56 characters. On Windows XP in particular, it is easy to exceed that limit because your My Documents folder is under "Documents and Settings" and you may be rendering to a "Vegas Movie Studio PE 9.0" folder underneath it.

My aim is to have them for download in segments of 20 to 30 minutes each (a training video). I want them to be playable on mac and pc. I would like to have them also playable on the web, but haven't got that far yet. AVI export results in huge huge huge files so far. tips on that would be helpful as well.

Good tip but I'm rendering them to t:\regina-dvd-renders\regina-video-new1.mov which is not so long.

Again, it just "renders" in a half second and doesn't save anything.

Ok, so what you need is this:
http://eugenia.gnomefiles.org/2007/11/09/exporting-with-vegas-for-vimeo-hd/
You will have to do two changes compared to the tutorial, one for the resolution and one for the bitrate. If the DVDs you are ripping are widescreen, export at 854x480 at 2500 kbps (instead of the suggested 1280x720 at 5 mbps). If it's 4:3, then export at 640x480 at 2 mbps (2000 kbps).

Thank you so much Eugenia, but seems I wasn't clear: I'm taking a client's dvd and turning it into several 20 minute downloadable videos. I was told .mov quicktime would be good for this, but again, Vegas is failing to render in that format. I look forward to your recommendations. Thanks for your help.

The tutorial I linked is what you need. You simply cut your videos at 20 minutes and you export as I mentioned above. The MP4 videos created *are* quicktime compatible.

"Again, it just "renders" in a half second and doesn't save anything."

i think i know this. heres a tangented solution:

1) select whatever QuickTime preset u want
2) change the render path & drive > change to root of your C (OS) drive
3) it should now render
4) now check share/permission settings for wherever you are failing to render to (right-click > Share)
