Unable to separate Video and Audio tracks

This is driving me crazy. Both in Movie Studio 16 and now sometimes in Vegas Movie Studio 9 I am finding that I can't separate the Video and audio tracks when making cuts and movements. I am using a fairly old W10 - 64bit platform which was very high end but some years ago. Is this a compatibility problem? Studio 16 platinum. was always a problem but Studio 9 was working fine until recently but now is making it very difficult to isolate the tracks one from another.

I'm very confused as to why this should happen.

Are you perhaps forgetting to "Temporarily ungroup" the tracks before working on them? In VMS16 Platinum it's a button on the bottom toolbar.
