Uncontrollable echo when capturing from Hi8

Just run up Vegas Movie Studio for the very first time. Started a capture and I get horrendous echo that builds and builds within seconds of starting.

Hi8 camera feeding analogue sound via an ATI 9800 Capture card - brand new computer. Sound card is an Audigy 2 Sound Blaster. Audio sounds like it might be perfect - for about a second no more - then the audio goes into a crazy echo that gets louder and louder, then it gets so loud I have to close down Vegas to get out of it.

Any ideas anyone?

Check the recording input mixer for the sound card. I'll bet you're recording "What U Hear" or something like that. The capture program monitors the audio at a slight delay, so what you've just recorded gets played back a fraction of a second later, and then gets recorded and delayed again. You'll want to select the line input instead.

Thanks, that's cured the echo!! But now there's no sound at all.

I have two that make sense for this project (being analogue) "Aux 2" or "Lin-in 2/Mic 2" neither of which give me any sound. Of course, I checked I wasn't on mute - but still nothing.

Weird thing was, when I had the echo problem I heard the sound then (if only for a second or two). Pictures are recording without a problem by the way!

Thanks for the pointer to the sound controls on audio card - I should have realised, but the computer's completely new.

You might need to go into the driver control for the card and select the recording input to match whichever one you have plugged it into.
BTW this isn't the best way to capture video. You'll get better results using a firewire interface however seeing as how you only have a Hi8 camera you'll then need some form of A->D converter like the ADVC100 or ADVC300.

You could also borrow a Digital8 camera or deck. That will play back the Hi8 tapes from the Firewire output.

Thanks everyone, but I discovered what the problem was.

The Audigy 2 card I have installed bypasses the sockets on the back of the computer, all access is via the sockets on the front panel. I had thought the front and back sockets would be connected identically but this appears not to be the case.
