Hi all,
Long time lurker, few times poster here. I've got a question about multichannel audio rendering. Here's a little background on what I'm trying to do. Last year, I shot some 4K footage with my FDR-AX100 camcorder which I used in tandem with a Zoom mic that records 4-channel audio. My plan was to take the camcorder audio and the audio from the digital recorder and merge them together to make a 5.1 soundtrack. I have been successful in doing this and now I'm at the point of rendering and here's where I need some help.
My original plan was to put this footage on a Blu-ray disc using DVD Architect as my solution; however, when I tried that, it gave me an error saying that the default bitrate was higher than what Blu-ray allows (my camcorder was set to 60 MBps at the time of shooting). So I decided to just be content with having a large MXF file figuring that I could just use the multichannel option to retain surround sound. I funneled my audio through stereo busses per the instructions that Sony has on their website, and while I was successful in my rendering out to 8 channels, I can't get the multichannel audio to play as I would expect. I have been using VLC player as my primary playback device and I can see the 8 channels and select between them; however, they only play back in stereo per channel. Maybe I'm misinterpreting what multichannel audio is, but I was expecting that the 8 channels would play back as surround sound audio (in other words, all channels playing back simultaneously). Having to select between the audio tracks doesn't do me any good for what I am trying to achieve. I mapped my audio in the following manner: L, R audio would go to Bus 1 (Stereo), Center to Bus 2, LS, RS to Bus 3 and then if I had music that I wanted to play back through all speakers, I routed that to Bus 4. In VP13, this plays back perfectly, but in VLC player or Windows Media Player, it only plays back an individual bus in stereo. Am I doing something wrong? Again, maybe I'm misunderstanding how this multichannel stuff works, but what I'm trying to achieve doesn't seem like it should be this difficult. In any case, ANY help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
