You might want to try the wave filter... Not sure it will look credible though.

make everything a little blue/greener too. And have the wave effect big & relatively slow.

Nat, I'd think it would be a good idea if using 2 or 3 times the effect (in a chain) with slightly different settings to distort the image with different timings and curves.

AND: dont't forget the audio. I'd guess 70% of the "credibility effect" could be created just with an appropriate audio track.

I have used the Digital Hotcakes aqua drops backrounds and used the bump map to displace the other image, works pretty good with some blue/green tint like others mentioned.

Probably the easiest way to achieve this is to place a noise texture on the track above your video and parent it using a Displacement map as the Composite Mode. Then animate the noise texture slowly over time (keyframe the Progress parameter). You can adjust how much the noise affects the video using the Scale (Horiz/Vert) on the Displacement map.

Now Johnny, you've probably pointed out something *very* interesting.. !
A free ticket for this guy ! ; D

It you really want to make it believable, get a copy of particleIllusion and add some subtle bubbles rising.

Try this one on for size, it works very well for the underwater illusion.

G'day Spot.

Is there a Vegas 5 version of this? I tried it using the slightly different controls of VV5 and I come out with the text appearing as, hmmmm, hard to describe, it'sl like an invisible stone in the water, can't actually see the text, but you can see the water "flow" around it.

I can build you one in about 30 seconds. The Vegas 4 version will open up the same, but I'll build one, look for it on the VASST site in a couple minutes.
[edit] it's up there now, look for "Watery Text"

I found this neat little program last year called CAUSTIC GENERATOR.

http://www.lysator.liu.se/~kand/caustics/

It creates an animation of wave type that you would see on the top of a swimming pool. If blended correctly, it gives a great water illusion. IT used to be free and probably still is.

You have to see it to understand, but it might give the illusion that you want.
