'Unknown Media Type' when trying to burn dvd

Hi everyone - Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm trying to burn my current project to dvd. It's all set up with menus, preview looks great, etc. etc. So I click on 'Make DVD'. Then I chose the second button (prepare and burn). On the next screen, I choose 'Current project'. Then I get a couple of 'informational warnings' (which it says I can ignore). So far everything is fine.

Now I get to the next screen (Select Burn Parameters). The 'Volume Name' and 'Device' are filled in properly, but the 'Speed' is greyed out and says 'Unknown'. The 'Erase Mode' options (bottom left) are all greyed out and the 'Media Information' section (bottom right) has 'Disc Type: Unknown Media Type' and 'Disc Status: Unsupported'. My only options (at the bottom) are 'cancel' and 'back'.

I tried clicking on 'load' (top right) but that doesn't seem to do anything.

I clicked on 'Advanced' and then 'Media Type' and it seems to know there is a dvd in the drive - gives me information such as Media Manufacturer ID and Data Area Start Sector and stuff like that - but I can't go any further.

I can use another program to burn the file to a dvd (though it's a bit cumbersome) but I'm wondering why it's not working through DVD Architect.

Any help would be appreciated.

Can you tell us about the DVD disc? Is it a DVD-RW? What brand is it?

Worst case, you can save your DVD as a prepared file and use ImgBurn to burn the VIDEO_TS folder to a disc. (ImgBurn also includes a nice feature for verifying the burn, which can help confirm that your DVD burn went well.) But I do recommend in any event staying away from poor quality disc brands like Memorex.

I've actually tried DVD-Rs from three different manufacturers - Panasonic, Memorex, and Sony. So I don't think it's a problem with the dvds themselves.

Whole thing just seems odd. As I said, I can burn them using another program (and the save dvd drive). And - of course - 'unknown media type' is not a topic in the help section. <smile>

You haven't told us what burner and DVDA version you have. Some newer burner firmware is not compatible with older DVDA versions.

That being said, you can go into Preferences and set your burner type as "generic."
Verbatim and T-Y blanks are generally recommended by users.
See if that works for you.

Seriously, I'll look it up but it might be a couple of days - I am a nurse and am about to start four days of 12-hour shifts. I'll probably do nothing but work and sleep for the next few days.

I can say that my computer is new (bought in late Feb.) so it should be fairly up to date. (Granted, it's not a high-end computer but still...)

I will try setting the burner type as 'generic' and see if that helps. Thanks for the advice and I'll be back in a few days.

I encountered this same problem after updating to Windows 10. I solved it by going to Options > Preferences> Burning> Advanced and clicking "Use legacy disc drivers".
