Unlucky for some..

I've been a Vegas user since Version 4 and I've rarely needed to seek help here. This time I've got a problem that has me baffled. Vegas 12 is stable and running very smoothly. I took the plunge and installed V13. I had crash at startup problems but managed to solve them by removing GoPro studio. Now V13 loads but it will not recognise any mp3 or mov files. Mp3 files in existing VEGs playback garbled and I have no template for mp3 export. I found a forum thread with this problem but no-one had a definitive answer. It seems strange that V12 is fine but V13 has problems. I've also noted that V13 is using "Vegas Pro 13.0\FileIO Plug-Ins\mcplug2" for mp3 decoding. V12 uses "Vegas Pro 12.0\FileIO Plug-Ins\mp3plug2" for it's decoding. Mp3 and MOV files are also missing from Vegas' File Explorer. Any suggestions?

As for the GoPro studio CFHD startup crash see the sticky thread at the top of this forum. GoPro has made a fixed CFHD file available.

As for MP3 files. They play fine for me. If I load an mp3 file directly into Vegas 13 and check its media properties Vegas 13 still uses mp3plug2 to decode. If the mp3 audio is in a video file then the video codec always takes precedence for the file I/O plug-in listed.

Odds are when you uninstalled one of those programs it removed some mp3 codec somewhere. Just reinstalling Vegas should solve the problem.

Thanks for checking that your V13 uses mp3plug2 on your system. It's a rainy Sunday here in Sydney and I'd like to sort this problem out today so that I might be be able to use V13 when my client arrives tomorrow. It's been five days since I purchased the upgrade and I've spent at least 10 hours trying to sort this out. Yes, I've re-installed numerous times, I've removed everything that I think could be causing the problem. I don't want to dig too deeply into my system because I need to keep V12 running smoothly. Is there a Vegas genius who can suggest a way to make V13 use mp3plug2 for decoding mp3 files or is the problem deeper than this?

Can you post a MediaInfo dump of the mp3 file header of a problem MP3 file.
mfnmfn wrote on 4/26/2014, 11:44 PM
I will publish a Mediainfo dump of an mp3 file but isn't it significant that on my system, V12 will load all mp3 files and v13 will load none and also display none in Vegas' file explorer? It's not just one mp3 file that's causing a problem.

I just want to clarify that I can drag an mp3 to the timeline in V13 from windows file manager. The sfk which is built displays a flat line and the playback from the timeline is garbled noise.

OK, in order to keep this thread alive I've spent a few more hours pursuing this problem. I downloaded and installed V11 64bit to see if it would import correctly. To my surprise V11 64 behaved exactly the same as V13 so I figured there has to be something wrong with my system. I then installed V11 32bit and found that it ran and imported all files perfectly. Do I have a 64bit problem only? Where can I get some help with this perplexing problem? I will get to the bottom of this!

mfnmfn,
I haven't personally heard of any issues quite like that, but it sounds like your plugin cache got corrupted, perhaps via your crashes.

Notably, Vegas supports QuickTime (.mov) and MP3 via 32-bit only, so we run a separate app called FileIOSurrogate.exe that runs in 32-bit mode to host those plugins (qtplug and mp3plug2), and Vegas sends it commands for reading and/or rendering files.

If VP13 is using mcplug2 on your system, then it's probably incorrectly failing to load mp3plug2.

I recommend clearing the FileIO plugin cache by one of these two techniques:
1) hold down ctrl+shift while launching Vegas, which will clear ALL preferences and caches
2) navigate to AppData\Local\Sony\Vegas Pro\13.0 and delete FFCache_x64_1033.ini (note that AppData is a hidden folder by default via Microsoft)

Chris,

You are the genius I was looking for. Just when I was facing the process of digging deep into my system setup, you contributed the one piece of info that I needed. Everything now works perfectly. Thank you so much.

I've got say, that was the most perplexing problem I've faced in my 10 years of daily Vegas use. Great to see an SCS employee contribution here. Thanks again!

Chris,
this sort of priceless information needs to be made more accessible, maybe in the Knowledgebase or somewhere.

Bob.

mfnmfn,
I'm glad that worked.

A bit off topic: This is one of those odd cases where uninstalling and reinstalling would likely have magically fixed the problem, because that should trigger the plugin cache to be rebuilt. But that would have been mysterious and unsatisfying compared with truly finding the root cause of the issue. :-)
