You're probably seeing the preview in the "Preview/Auto" mode. Change this to "Best/Full," which should improve things for you.

Also, keep in mind that if you have lots of FX applied -- e.g., color correction, slo-motion, complex pan and crop, etc., -- the playback frame rate will be slower than normal, which may also make the image look less sharp than you expect.

While I agree with JackW, it's probably the settings in the preview, I've always found that video I view in the trimmer is sharper than the timeline preview.

also right click on the preview window and make sure the box that reads:
adjust size and quality for optimal playback is not checked.
I don't even know why they put that in there. It makes everything look terrible.
