unsupported format

Hi there.I'm hoping some here can help me with this. I have used Video Factory 2 for some time. I loved the program. I recently got a neww digital camera, a Casio ExilimEX - S500, and cannot open any of the video files from it in Video Factory or Movie Studio...the audio can be imported, but not the video. The format for the video files is: AVI (MPEG-4)

Is there any way that I can import these files?

TIA

-Jill

I am having the same problem trying to use avi files from a new Canon S2

I'd guess the Canon S2 is producing MJPEG - have a look at this thread or search the forum for "MJPEG".

The advise about using G-Spot is particularly good - lots of cameras produce avi, and lots of editors support avi. The problem is that avi isn't a video format - it's a container file format - the video itself needs the appropriate software (codec) to decode it.

I nelieve you are coorect about the MJPEG format. I can play the video in Windows Media Player and edit the video in VideoWave. Is there a way I can use a codec from either of those products with VMS?

There are several free or nearly free MJPEG codecs available for download. Installing most any of them will allow Vegas to open and render MJPEG files.

Alternatively, if you can edit the file in VideoWave, can you then render it to a format that Vegas can use? Probably the best choices would be DV .avi, uncompressed .avi, or WMV with a very very high bitrate.
