I've never edited HD before, but what's your CPU make/model? I've heard that dual-core high GHz is obviously better for HD editing.

And does regular SD editing take a long time too, or just your HD videos?

MPEG4 is a delivery format, not an editing format.

Use a DV or HDV avi proxy for editing, get it the way you want it, then replace the proxy with the original for final render.

Of course the quality will not be as good as the original, because you are going from a compressed format to a further compressed format.
