Unusual Capture problem

When I attempt to capture a segment (about 8 minutes) the capture process starts normally. Anywhere from 2% to as much as 57% into the process the Capture progress stops. However, the software is not frozen or locked. The Capture duration and position continue to count. When I stop the capture, a file is created to the point where progess stopped and the quality of that file is not a problem.

The drive that I capture to has about 80 GB of free space and is a 7200 RPM SATA drive. The system is a 3.0 GHz P IV with 1 GB of 3200 speed RAM on a motherboard running 800 FSB. I'm using Windows XP running only Norton's Anti Virus and Vegas at the time of attempted capture.

I've seen this happen when there is a loss of control track on the source tape. It doesn't take much to stop the playback in some cameras or decks. We run into this quite often when capturing Hi-8 or poor quality VHS, but it can also happen with digital tape.

Another cause might be fragmentation of the hard drive to which you are trying to capture.
