Unwanted Crossfades

Bambino wrote on 10/7/2011, 5:58 AM
I have created a slideshow and it has appeared with crossfades between each photo because I foolishly did not check that the Options --> Preferences --> Editing --> Automatically Insert Crossfades between Selected Media box was unchecked.

Is there any way at this stage that I can get rid of the crossfades, preferably all in one go, since the slideshow is quite long? Or I would settle for substituting the crossfades for one of the transitions.

I hope someone can help!

You can certainly convert the cross-fades to any transitions simply by dragging a transition from the Transition panel onto any cross-fade.

You can even do the whole set of clips at one by selecting the entire slideshow or series of events on your timeline and then dragging a transition from the Transitions panel onto any one of the cross-fades. It should replace the entire selected series of cross-fades with that transition.

Thanks for replying, Steve.

It works just as you described, but one solution creates another problem! I have an image length of 7 seconds. If I create a transition between the images, and then want to use a text boxes on the track above to have writing on the photos, the length sof the image and text boxes are not the same, - that is, they do not exactly line up with each other with the result some some of the text on one image remains on the screen briefly whilst the next image is being displayed. Do you know of a way round this apart from manually dragging the text boxes to align them with the pictures?

Well, if you create your text overlays dragging one of the title templates from the Titles panel to the timeline, these title events will each by 5 seconds long by default.

Does that help?

Thanks for staying with me - but it doesn't really solve my problem since I still have to make a manual correction to each text overlay to make it match the 7 second length of my photo plus the time of the transition.

Are you saying you want to make the text LONGER?

I'm sorry. I misunderstood. I thought you wanted the text to disappear before each slide transitions to the next.

I don't know if it works in your case, but the following could be done: select all the pictures and group them together (press "G"), press "control" button and drag the edge of the leftmost (or rightmost) picture, then each picture will be shortened or lengthened in the same manner. Same could be done to the text of course.

Sorry if I am not making myself clear, Steve. No, I do not want to make the text longer, I want it to line up exactly with my 7 second long clip, but whatever I do the text box appears to overlap the picture clip (so it must be more than a 5 second default?) and I have to adjust it manually.

Thanks for your suggestion Sergeys. If I cannot solve the alignment problem when I am actually dealing with the individual clips, your solution may be the way to go.

At the top of the text generator window is a Duration. Change this to 7 seconds as you are editing a text event. Vegas remembers this and uses it the next time you create a new event. Note that changing this value doesn't change the length of the current event on the timeline, but it will affect future events not yet added.

Thank you Chienworks. Can you tell me if adding a transition to clips makes any difference to their length? For example, if I have a still image clip of 7 seconds with a transition and then I insert a text overlay of 7 seconds, will these align on the tracks or will the transition make the still image longer than the text? If it does, what can I do to keep things in alignment so that it does not have a dominoe effect on all the following images?

Sorry to sound so pathetic, but I'm a struggling newbie!

VMS does not add additional frames to create a transition. It should not affect the length of the still images at all.
