The Opteron will be better, but not because of the 64 bit technology, but becase it is faster at 32 bit operations (at the same clock frequency) than current processors. In order to take advantage of the 64 bit technology and gain an even greater performance increase, you will need to have a 64 bit operating system, and V4 will have to be recompiled to make use of the 64 bit technology.

For me..? I can afford AMD and it's compatible with what I do..I may not opt to 64-bit tho...maybe in 5-6 years..never had a prob with pentium stuff except in the pocketbook, so my choice and millions and millions of others..? NOT Intel HT...! but I wrest judgement alot what the local boys say here, and they've NEVER steered me wrong..say no to XP, WMA9, IE6, etc., etc...'course, the rest of you will leave me in the dust, but I ain't got the budget/support some of you have at your beck and call, and this is usually the constantly major disconnect alot of these newsgroups have and continue to have, Cakewalk included...but, I spose, it is a forum, right..?

Actuatly, 64bit has been aroud for awhile, but not on the intel platform. SGI has been using 64-bit for years now. Of course, most people can't afford SGI's, and Vegas doesn't run on them (UNIX core), so that doesn't give us an advantage. I wonder if Vegas was compiled for Unix if it could run on non-windows computers. I agree though that intel charges a lot. Most of it is marketing costs. Probely that's why other NLE's cost so much compared to Vegas too.
Also, aren't Mac's 128 bit now? Last I heard (in 2000) mac's were going 128 bit with the g4's. The only bad part is that everything needs to be re-compiled for that. :) It's gonna suck when Intel goes 64bit or RISC. Then everything we have will be useless on the new computers! Well, AMD is susposedly going to make a 64/32 bit compatible chip that will run both. :) can't wait to se that!
