update for H.264

Doesn't it seem odd that we can't export H.264 in MOV format from Vegas? Is there some sort of patch i can apply to add that capability? I'm at Sony Vegas Plat 9.0b right now.

I'm having to export to Photo-JPEG first (large files) then open in QT Pro and export using H.264 just to get an H.264 .mov ... Could save tons of time and space if i could just do it right from Vegas along with my other exports, manage templates all in one place, etc.

Change the extension of your h.264 encoded files from .mp4 to .mov

Changing the extension is not the right thing to do. You simply re-wrap the MP4 to MOV if you _really_ need to do that (in my opinion, you shouldn't do this, MP4 is perfectly valid). The MP4Box utility can do re-wrapping without re-encoding.

Why not? Please steer me to an authoritative source.

You are right about one thing; it doesn't make any difference, except when a client specifically requests a h.264 encoded .mov file.

Except for a couple of tags, I know of no substantive difference.

Thanks for the info.

Nod, i've got a requirement to hand someone a few of my short works as "QuickTime MOV" files on an ISO dvd that will be combined with many other such files into a series of ISO dvd's to played at a Film Festival from a Mac laptop into a projector.

I thought about just exporting from Vegas as MP4 then renaming, but i don't want to risk these works not being included because i did it "wrong" or for some reason they have playback problems on his setup because i deviated from the instructions. I don't know enough about it to know about re-wrapping, though.

Curious for sure, though. If i can save that extra step, that'd be great, especially if i hit this down the road for a longer work, where the processing time and filesizes get exponentially bigger than what i'm already dealing with.

If the playback is with Quicktime Player, they will play with either extension. I don't think there is any difference on a Mac box, but you would need to check.
Same with the VLC Player on Windows.

Only exception would be with multichannel audio, in which case they would need to be encoded as .mov, I think.
