Updating graphic card drivers

Seems a number of issues with Vegas (and other) programs relate to graphic cards and often the conventional wisdom is to update the driver. I just had occasion to contact AMD about a driver update for my laptop, and part of their (prompt) response to me was, in my opinion, significant: "NOTE: Please ensure that you remove/uninstall the existing driver completely from the system using the DDU tool, using DDU Utility (Display Driver Uninstaller) by launching it in Safe mode. It will help you completely uninstall AMD graphics card drivers and packages from your system, without leaving leftovers behind. Because, overwriting the driver files could lead to some issues."

I also found if you let Windows install the drivers things get even worse.

A particular annoyance of mine is that if you let Windows search for the most recent update of a driver, it will say that the "best" driver is already installed, even though you can find an update (and presumably, improved) driver by going to the GPU card manufacturer's web site.
