upgrade path to Vegas?

Howdy. I am seriously interested in picking up Video Factory (new hardrive, XP then Video Factory, within a month for all I hope) but was curious how the upgrade path is to Vegas? Specifically, are they the same codebase with options just disabled in the consumer version? For example, can VF projects be opened in Vegas? Also, anyone know if Vegas supports preview on an external TV via a dedicated I/O card or not?

VF seems the way to go but it would be nice to be able to bump up to Vegas once I can afford it.

Cheers!

Well, VideoFactory is based more on Vegas 3 code than Vegas 4 code, but what you've learned in VF will transfer to Vegas 4 very easily. The only part of switching that confused me at first was that the [Begin] and [End] buttons in the effects windows are gone. However, Vegas offers keyframes instead which are vastly more powerful.

Yes, Vegas does open VF projects and support preview to TV through firewire. You can probably use your DV camcorder to convert the firewire signal to analog for the television.

If you're not in a huge hurry to get Vegas, you might want to hold out until Vegas 5 comes out (no, i don't know when, but probably sometime in the next 6 to 9 months would be my guess). SonicFoundry usually offers spectacular upgrade deals to existing customers for the first 30 days of the new version's release.
