upgraded to vegas pro18 rendering very slow

I've just upgraded to vegas pro 18 from 16 - got new hardware too and the render time is very slow.

History:

I was using a 7 year old laptop - intel i5 gen 3 8 gb ram ssd drive vegas pro 16

a 1.5 hour video project took about 3.5 hours to render.

I've upgraded my hardware now i have a ryzen 7 - 8gb of ram and a fast ssd - i also upgraded to vegas pro 18

I loaded an old project and all of the video appeared corrupt. I tried new projects and new video files - everything appeared corrupt - the video preview was just a mass of colour. I tried rendering in case it was just a preview problem. Renedering was very fast (120 fps) but there was audio and no video.

After a lot of searching on google i found an article that said rename the folder vegaspro\file ioplugins\so4compoundplug and restart vegas.

That fixed the corrupt videos. I can import and render again. Problem is that when I go to render there is no hardware acceleration (no AMD VCE) option. So while I can render now, an old project of 1.5 hours sit still taking 3.5 hours and i get a frame rate of about 10 fps average. So i've upgraded hardware and software and I'm no better off.

I've also tried using source files from different cameras to see if that was the problem.

Any ideas greatly appreciated.
