!!!Urgent Question for Peter!!!!

Here's an issue that I don't THINK has been discussed
yet...We need advice for a weekend session...

Problem: How best to transfer from ANALOG 1" (SMPTE
striped) in 2 passes and keep the best sync and phase lock
between tracks 1-8 and 9-15...?

Setup: MOTU MTP AV to read SMPTE from analog and generate
MTC and WORD CLOCK fed to the a MOTU 1224 interface...

The big question is: In this case, considering that the
analog ATR is not a "clock locked" timecode source,
wouldn't CHASE LOCK be the better option for recording
inbound tracks and dealing with speed drifts?

Thanks in advance

David

I know this isn't really answering your question, but in all sync and
transfer cases, I would recommend, just for peace of mind, recording
a click or "two-beat" at the top of the recording on all 16 tracks of
the 1". Then, once you're done transferring, if there was any drift
in the two transferd, you can just line up the zero crossings of all
16 tracks for that two-beat.

Just an extra for you...

Since it doesn't sound like it is important to sync against the 1"
tape, just transfer the audio into Vegas. Adding a click or count in
like Charles suggested would help to align the tracks in Vegas.

You are basically sampling an analog source that has no clock. Yes,
it is possible for the analog source to drift because it is tape. If
the MOTU can convert SMPTE to Word Clock, by all means use it to
slave the clocks on the 1224.

Make sure that Vegas is set to trigger only if you plan on monitoring
the recorded tracks against the new recording or the original tape.

Peter,

Is this to say that the proper chase settings within Vegas for this
transfer scenario would be:

Chase Lock - during record with NO playback monitoring.
Trigger Lock - during Vegas playback in sync with the 1" analog deck

???

BTW>>>It IS important that we sync against the 1", as occassionally,
we fly to Vegas for fixing and comping and then fly back to the 1"
ATR.

Thanks
