USB adio - pops and scratches

I’m getting popping/scratching noises in my video captures.

I’m trying to capture digital video from a Sony Handycam (set for USB streaming).

If I try to capture video from the Handycam to my PC’s USB2 port, frames are dropped. The USB driver supplied by Sony for its Handycam, frustratingly enough, will not allow for full frame capture via USB port. The only way I can fully capture video is via a composite connection from the Sony Handycam to an ATI Radeon video card using ATI Rage Theater video capture drivers (the video quality is excellent.)

For whatever reason, Vegas will not recognize the left and right (red and white) audio composite connections on the ATI Radeon card. For audio capture, Vegas will only accept audio from the USB port (Sony Handycam cam to USB 2 port on my motherboard).

Basically, I am capturing video via composite connection to ATI Radeon card and I am capturing audio via USB connection to my motherboard. I can’t get Vegas to work any other way. The USB audio has recently started generating several pops and scratches. I've done everything I can think of, including formatng the hard drive and re-installing everything over and over again.

I have also brought up my Sony capture software that comes with the Handycam, and the USB audio works fine on it, so the pop/scratch effect only happens when I use Vegas.

If I can’t resolve this problem, I thought about buying Dazzle’s Digital Video Creator 80 to capture digital video/audio and then edit it in Vegas. The product is shown here: http://www.pinnaclesys.com/ProductPage_n.asp?Product_ID=1427&Langue_ID=7

I'd rather not spend money if there is an easy fix to my problem. Any suggestions?

This really belongs in the Vegas video forum but I think you'll get a similar answer in that you should be capturing via firewire. I got a 3 port TI chipset (recommended) PCI firewire card for just over $30.
