Doing voice over segment for a documentary film and I am wondering if a USB digital desktop microphone would be sufficient. I like the idea since it is plug-n-play set up and would be compatible with my sound card. Any suggestions?
Depends on how the mic sounds. I do voice-overs (mostly radio commercials, but also multimedia and film), and wouldn't work with anything less than a large capsule condenser with a tube preamp. I do like the sound of a shure SM-7, but not as much as the condenser mic, and certainly not enough to pay what it costs when I can have the condenser for less. Even when I go to other studios, I drag my mic and preamp. If I know the studio I may or may not take a compressor, depending on what they have. My voice is my living, so I am careful how I put it into a machine.
