USB Type C – Firewire Adapter

I’ve been itching for these days where computer components are now small & powerful enough that I can create a small form factor PC that I could then use exclusively for bulk video capture off my old DV tapes. PROBLEM of course, IEEE Firewire ports have now gone the way of the Buffalo.

As far as I know, there is no other adapter which convert FireWire to say USB.. Sure they sell them but everyone says they don’t work.

So I was about to give up and go with a bigger case that supports an old firewire expansion card but then…I heard about this miraculous sounding new USB Type C port coming out which sounds pretty sweet.. and started thinking, could (would?) somebody ever come up with say, a breakout box with IEEE ports which could then transmit the avi files back to your HD via the super fast USB Type C connection?

Or am I just dreaming?

There are a lot of old DV tapes out there that people are eventually going to decide it’s time to digitize.. when they notice their old camcorder only has a firewire port, they are going to want something to bridge the tech gap.

Maybe there is a way (besides going analogy using the component cables) out there to do this already?.. .I am all ears! Thanks

There are plenty of FireWire PCIe cards still available and they aren't big either.

+1

I put a Firewire PCIe card in my last PC build because the motherboard didn't have one and it worked out great. I was able to capture my HDV footage from minidv tape and Hard Disk Recorder without a problem.

You can't have a working adapter consisting of a firewire plug one end, a cable in the middle and a USB plug at the other end. I believe some of these were available on the internet at one time.

The protocols of Firewire and USB are quite different. It would require some electronics in between to do the conversion. I have heard of some claimed solutions but I forget the details. You might be able to pickup a Pinnacle MovieBox on ebay, but they cost several hundred dollars new. A plugin Firewire card is much simpler if that is an option for you.

This is still USB and incompatible with Firewire. Its main feature is that it can connect to either host or peripheral device.
