(After a couple of previous "problem" postings, here's a "solution" posting ...)
To update fellow sufferers with this problem, I have just picked up an Adaptec USB2 PCMCIA card, plugged it into my Sony Vaio (P4 1.6/512 ram), installed the drivers, connected the External Firewire/USB hard drive using the USB2 port, and held my breath as I played back from the timeline.
Glad to report no problems after 10 minutes of uninterrupted playback - the extra data rate obviously gets past whatever was causing the problem.
I am relieved - had this not not worked, I was going to have to rebuild the project in Premiere, which for some reason didn't have the playback problem on the laptop.
