using both audio channels

Ghost Tree wrote on 12/6/2011, 5:23 AM
Hi, more questions...
I recorded some audio with a Tascam DR100, dialog and room tones and nature sounds. I used an external XLR Sennheiser me66. It only records to one of the channels, what is the best way to get the sound on both channels? This is for a short film. I can righclick the file in the timeline and click "Both", but seems like that's not a good way. Suggestions?

Use Tools | Render To New Track.

Choose target spec as "WAV-Stereo-whatever-your-project-bitdepth-and-sample-rate-is", or whatever other spec you may prefer..

However for realistic background natural ambience you may prefer a genuine stereo recording which will give 'dimension'. You may be able to fake this by applying reverb...

Assuming you have a stereo (2-channel) file with audio on only one channel. Right-click the event and select "Channels" and use whatever channel has the sound. By default it will be a mono track that will come out of both speakers at the same level... creating what is known as a phantom center position.
And as Geoff pointed out, there would be no stereo dimension to it however.

I only see one waveform on one channel, so it mustn't be stereo. I tried Tools>Render new track but still only end up with one channel on the new file..
Also, how do you simulate stereo with reverb in Vegas?

Sennheiser me66 is a MONO mic therefore just 1 channel. Read rraud's post above for how to make mono sound come out of both speakers in Vegas.
Could add some short reverb to 'simulate' stereo, but will never be as good as recording the original sounds with a STEREO mic.

Most (all ?) plugins in their stereo versions have the wet signal coming back in stereo with spatial diversity. Totally independant of vegas or whatever application.

Sorry, I'm not getting it, if I right click the audio and go to channels, none of of the functions seems to put sound on both channels.
Also, the audio is only on one speaker.

OK. In VP10 here right-click the event and select "Channels" and choose Left or Right certainly works fine here.....
