Using Computer monitor as preview monitor

Finatic13 wrote on 10/31/2006, 8:38 AM
Ive got a spare 20" Monitor lying around and wanted to hook it up to the output of my ADVC-100 and use it as a preview monitor for when im editing, is there a lead or converter i can get as the ADVC-100 only outputs via S VIDEO or Composite video and my monitor accepts a VGA connection!
help appreciated
cheers

why not just use the preview on secondary monitor?

i would however i only have a single output graphics card and all my PCI slots are taken

you could get a standard PCI slot dual output off of ebay for next to nothing, just so you know ;)

oh, and I suppose I'll be helpful here too :P

I think what you're looking for would be a scan converter. Not certain, but that is what I am thinking.

That would be defeating the purpose of the Canopus box.
Go buy a cheap TV that has audio & video jacks instead.
You'll be much better off in trying to judge colour.

he may not care so much about color and just want to have a bigger picture.

either way, a decent converter seems to run around $120, the cheapy I just linked there is by no means even a decent converter (at least that's my guess).

Using a computer monitor for any kind of color correction is crazy (unless you're doing HD, in which you are more than likely going to be correcting on something similar to what it's being viewed on and so it's not so foolish. That and Pro monitors that run HD resolutions cost as much as a couple very decent PC's. :)

Correct colour etc is of no importance at all as latter post says i just wanted a 20" preview and thought i might be able to get it without spending a lot of ££
