Using HQ18 YouTube video in Vegas 8...

Hello,

Vegas will seemingly open an HQ18 video from YouTube, but all one really gets is a scrambled mess of green blocks because it's apparently not handling H.264 properly. The sound is fine, though, so does anyone know how to get the video part working without resorting to something silly like rerendering via QuickTime Pro?

I have no suggestion on getting the video working. However, you can instead use a free piece of software called VDownloader (at www.vdownloader.es) to pull video/audio from YouTube and a whole bunch of others. You have the option of using about a dozen different formats, but I found that MP4 works especially well.

True, getting the videos isn't the problem - it's using it once received. The default for HQ18 is MP4, which is an H.264 video stream multiplexed with an AAC audio stream. Vegas 8 handles the AAC stream fine, but the H.264 stream is whacked. Do you see the same thing?

You can run the files through Super (from Erightsoft) at the same settings.
This should allow them to be opened in Vegas.

EDIT: I just discovered the same thing will also work in Format Factory, which I am beginning to use more and more for simple conversions.

Well now isn't this infuriating. I dropped said clip, as-is, into something I haven't used in years - Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 6.0 - and it works without a hitch. Now I guess the digging begins because I have no clue why Vegas 8 wants to choke on it.
