Using Huffyuv codec wt Vegas 9

A few years ago I could use the Huffyuv codec with Vegas to decode some Huffyuv encoded material in the AVI container. Recently I tried it and it wouldn't work.

This got me thinking that it may not be a Vegas 9 issue but more of a Windows 7 x64 issue. Obviously, since the Huffyuv is only 32 bit, I'm using the Vegas 9 32 bit version.. My theory is that the installation simply doesn't work so that Vegas can "see" the DLL file.

Has anyone been able to install (or manually install) the Huffyuv codec allowing Vegas 9 x32 to decode Huffyuv/AVI video files ?

32 bit software gets installed into the "Program Files (x86)" folder. Maybe a registry entry points to it in "Program Files" instead.

I have been using Lagarith with Vegas 64 bit with no problem.

Thanks Peter, that's along the lines I was thinking.

Unless I'm wrong, I don't think that the Lagarith codec will decode a Huffyuv encoded video ??

I wonder if it's just a matter of moving the Huffyuv DLL file into another directory where Vegas will find it ? But I'm not sure what that would be....if it would work at all.

No, I would not expect Lagarith to decode HuffYUV. I mentioned it as an alternative for future work.

Where is the HuffYUV .dll now? Rather than move it, make temporary copies in various places that might help and delete if they don't. The folder that has vegas.exe might be one to try.

Use regedit to scan the registry for huffyuv and look for any references and patch if they look wrong. (Wise to backup registry first of course.)

Another approach might be to get hold of a 32 bit Windows system temporarily and convert your HuffYUV .AVIs to Lagarith .AVIs. They are both lossless encoders so you won't lose any quality.

By the way, the latest Lagarith installer is good for both 32bit and 64bit systems. I don't think HuffYUV has been updated for over a decade.
